It’s been a long time since I have been this excited about new releases from Braida.
The 2009 Barberas are truly stellar. They are less bombastic than some of the wines of the recent past, and more built on minerality and length. Let’s hope that is a sign of even greater things to come.
The 2009 Monferrato Rosso Il Bacialè bursts from the glass with a rush of dark red fruit. This vinous, juicy wine is meant to be enjoyed on the young side, before its rustic personality begins showing too many of its less polished edges. Il Bacialè is Barbera, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.
The 2009 Barbera D’Asti Montebruna is a gorgeous, radiant wine laced with expressive fruit, grilled herbs and minerals. It is a bit reserved next to the estate’s other 2009’s, yet shows plenty of energy and fleshiness. The finish is beautiful and totally open.Anticipated maturity: 2012 – 2019.
The 2009 Barbera d’Asti Bricco dell’Uccellone is totally polished and refined from start to finish. Floral notes meld into clean, mineral-infused fruit as this restrained, beautiful Barbera opens up in the glass. The saline, vibrant finish is pure silk. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
The 2009 Barbera d’Asti Ai Suma is wonderfully perfumed, fresh and seductive. Roses, violets, plums, dark cherries and minerals are some of the aromas and flavors that flow from this textured, classy Barbera. The wine’s signature ripeness is there, but better balanced than in any young vintage I can remember tasting. This is a jewel of a wine from Braida. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
The 2010 Moscato d’Asti is a tasty, mid-weight wine with excellent varietal character and depth. Sweet spices, flowers and peaches flow through effortlessly to the vibrant, refreshing, finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2012.
