Braida di Giacomo Bologna from Rocchetta Tanaro (Asti) will be showing its wines at the 25th Merano Wine Festival, from the 5th to the 7th of November 2016, under the magnificent ceiling of the Kursaal Room (Table 48).
For the Bologna family, represented by Raffaella Bologna, Norbert Reinisch and Sergio Zucca, this is their twenty-fifth year at the event in Alto Adige: a milestone which highlights the fact that the family shares the views of an event which has now become an Italian and international point of reference.
Three Braida wines (Bricco dell’Uccellone Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2014, Bricco della Bigotta Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2009 and Bricco della Bigotta Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2014) have been selected this year.
Bricco dell’Uccellone 2014, in particular, has been assigned the Merano Wine Award Platinum (95+ points).
Bricco della Bigotta 2014 will be presented exclusively in magnums.
Bricco dell’Uccellone is the “third child” of Giacomo Bologna, the revolutionary winemaker from Rocchetta Tanaro (Asti) who, starting in 1982, made the selection of the single vineyard, low grape yields and the use of the barrique the tools with which to reclaim the dignity of one of Piedmont’s major grape varieties, Barbera, giving it a completely new lease of life.
It has a very deep ruby red colour with garnet highlights. Its rich, complex bouquet is characterised by outstanding concentration and weight, featuring scents of red fruit and berries, with underlying notes of minty spices, vanilla and liquorice. Generous flavour, great body, a remarkable structure, the perfect combination of varietal characteristics and the contribution of wood come together to offer incredible smoothness and class, with lingering aromatic persistency. It pairs well with roasts and other meat dishes, tasty sauces and mature cheeses.
The 2014 vintage has revealed unexpected potential. The work carried out in the vineyard, the investments made, and our courageous decisions, have rewarded us with a great Barbera.
Bricco della Bigotta is born in a vineyard in Rocchetta Tanaro which takes its name from the fact that an old woman who lived nearby paid more attention to the appearances associated with religious practices than the soul (being something of a bigot).
It has a garnet-shaded ruby red colour with purplish highlights. Its rich, intense and persistent bouquet is very well evolved, with sensations of liquorice, violet, plum and vanilla. The palate offers a fruity-spicy mixture, ranging from roast coffee to strong spices, turning out to be very well-balanced, vigorous and intense. The richness of expression is created by the spices which envelop the ripe plum flavour (the most evident fruit), conveying suaveness and potency. Pairs well with roast meat, game and hard cheeses.
2009 is a memorable vintage. This wine never ceases to amaze with its elegance combined with strength. Ruby red in colour with intense and intriguing scents. Once a grape that was misunderstood and destined to produce simple wines only, first Giacomo Bologna and then Giuseppe, brought it to its current, amazing status, in a wine that can corrupt even the most influential Italian and international connoisseurs. We brought the most extraordinary and healthy grapes into the cellar, with an outstanding sugar content.
Bricco della Bigotta 2009 is a muscular, powerful wine with great personality and excellent potential for ageing in the bottle. A sensual wine that beautifully reflects the heat that accompanied the harvest. Great structure and body, ripe fruit and sweet spices. It needs a little ageing in the bottle before reaching full maturity.
